Understanding Chiropractic Care in Boulder

The short answer

Chiropractic care uses specific, hands-on adjustments to restore movement to joints of the spine that have stiffened and guarded, which eases pressure on on irritated nerves, muscles, ligaments and tendons and helps calm the pain.

Chiropractic care gets described in a lot of ways, some of them overblown. Here is the plain version: what an adjustment actually does, what it helps with, what a first visit looks like, and how we keep it honest about what to expect.

What is chiropractic care?

At its core, chiropractic care works on how your spine moves. When a joint is misaligned and stiffens, the muscles around it guard, the area gets irritated and painful, and it stops sharing load the way it should. A specific adjustment restores movement to that joint, which takes pressure off the irritated tissue and helps the whole area settle. It is mechanical work on a mechanical problem.

What matters as much as the adjustment is the care around it. Every visit starts with checking your alignment and how you are moving.

  • Specific adjustments to restore movement where the spine has stiffened, matched in force to you.
  • Soft-tissue work to release the muscle tension that builds around a sore, guarded area.
  • Movement you can do at home to keep the range and rebuild support.
  • Practical changes to how you sit, lift, and sleep.

What can chiropractic care help with?

Chiropractic care is at its strongest with mechanical pain: the back, the neck, and the headache patterns and radiating aches that come from them. That is where the care fits best, where the evidence is clearest, and where most of the people we see are starting from. Part of a good first visit is confirming your problem is one of them and pointing you to the right place if it is not.

  • Low back pain and neck pain, the most common reasons people come in.
  • Headache patterns that start in the neck and shoulders.
  • Sciatica and radiating aches down an arm or leg.
  • The stiffness and guarding that build up around an old injury or a desk job.

What is a first visit like?

It starts with a conversation and a careful check, not an adjustment. We take a history, perform a thorough examination, and determine whether chiropractic care fits your problem. If it does, we explain what we found in plain language. If it does not, we will say so and help you find the right next step.

Then you come back for a second visit. That is where we go through everything the examination and any imaging turned up, explain what it means in plain language, and give you our recommendations: what we believe is going on, what we would do about it, and roughly how long we would expect it to take. You leave that visit knowing the plan, not guessing at it.

What does care cost, and do you take insurance?

No referral is needed to book, and we will go over the costs with you up front so there are no surprises. Costs depend on your plan and what your spine needs, and we will always walk you through it in plain numbers first.

  • No referral needed to book a first visit.
  • We go over the costs with you before anything begins, so you know what to expect.
  • Clear, up-front pricing if you are paying out of pocket.

We cannot promise a specific outcome or what your insurance will cover; every plan and every spine is different. What we can promise is an honest look and a straight answer.

As much relief as anti-inflammatories
For acute low back pain, a 2017 analysis of 15 studies with 1,699 participants, summarised by the U.S. National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, found spinal manipulation improved pain by an amount similar to the benefit produced by anti-inflammatory medication. Comparable relief, without the medication. What your own exam shows is what we set your expectations from.

Why Choose Chiropractic Care

Specific spinal adjustments tailored to what your spine actually needs, not a one-size-fits-all routine, with movement guidance so the relief holds between visits.

Specific, not a routine

The adjustment is matched to what your spine is actually doing that day, rather than the same sequence for everyone who walks in.

The care around the adjustment

Every visit starts by checking how you are moving, so what happens next is based on today rather than on your first appointment.

Movement guidance you can use

You leave with something to do between visits, which is what keeps the relief from wearing off by the next one.

Your Journey

What to Expect at Our Boulder Clinic

From your first visit to lasting relief, here's how the process works.
1

A conversation first

Your first visit starts with history and questions, not an adjustment.

2

A careful check

We look at how you move and work out whether this is something we can help with, or something that belongs with another provider.

3

A plan you agree to

You hear what we found, what we would suggest, and roughly how long before you should expect to notice a change.

4

Care, then spacing out

Most people start with a short course of visits and taper as things settle and daily activity gets easier.

Common Questions
Chiropractic questions we hear most
Answers to the questions our Boulder patients ask most.

Is chiropractic care safe?

For most people with common, mechanical back and neck pain, gentle chiropractic care has a strong safety record. The first visit includes a careful history and check so care is matched to your body, and low-force options are used for anyone who is sensitive or acutely sore. If something in your history or exam suggests you should be seen medically first, we will tell you.

Does an adjustment hurt, and what is the popping sound?

Most adjustments are not painful, and many people feel looser right afterward. That popping sound, when it happens, is gas shifting inside the joint, not bone moving, and a quiet adjustment is not a lesser one. If the sound is what worries you, say so and we will use a low-force approach that does not produce it.

How many visits will I need?

Fewer than the reputation suggests. The aim is to settle this episode and give you the movement and habits to keep it from returning, then taper off. After your first visit we will give you a realistic sense of the course so you know what you are agreeing to.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book a first visit directly, and we will go over the costs with you up front. If your problem turns out to need a medical or specialist opinion, we will point you there rather than keep you in care that does not fit.

How long would I be coming for?

The first goal is to resolve the issue and give you what you need to stay ahead of it. Some people choose an occasional check-in for a recurring problem, but that is always your decision, never a package you are locked into.
